Frequently Asked Questions

Is TF-CBT appropriate for sexual abuse survivors?

TF-CBT is the gold-standard evidence-based treatment for childhood sexual abuse trauma, extensively researched and endorsed by SAMHSA. It is specifically designed for this population and shows excellent outcomes.

I just found out my child was abused. What do I do first?

First, ensure your child’s immediate safety. Report to local law enforcement or Child Protective Services (mandatory). Seek medical evaluation if needed. Then contact Ikon Kids for therapeutic support. We will guide you through every step.

Will my child have to describe the abuse in therapy?

TF-CBT includes a gradual trauma narrative component, but children are never forced to describe abuse before they are ready. The pace is always child-led within the therapeutic framework.

How do parents/caregivers participate?

Caregiver participation is a core component of TF-CBT. Caregivers attend parallel sessions where they learn to support their child, process their own emotional response, and implement safety and healing strategies at home.

Is everything shared in sessions reported to authorities?

Mandatory reporting laws require therapists to report ongoing abuse, current danger, or new disclosures of abuse. Previously reported abuse already known to authorities is handled within the therapeutic relationship. All protocols are explained clearly at intake.

Does Ikon Kids provide prevention education?

Yes. Body safety education for children and prevention training for parents are available as community workshops. Prevention is as important as treatment in our mission.
